Seek refuge with Dayaa Devi who is the bridge to cross the ocean of SamsAra
Swami Desikan sets the basis for SaraNAgathi in this Shloka. He says if
the helpless person or the person who is not seeking any other help
seeking refuge with Dayaa Devi, then Dayaa Devi will help him cross
the ocean of SamsArA and reach every beautiful, ever green, and
glorius lotus feet of Lord of ThiruvEnkatam, sitting in the seven hills of
Thirumala. Man suffers with happiness and suffering in the disturbing
ocean of SamsArA. The only way to get out of this life and death
cycle is do SaranAgathi and reach the Lotus Feet of Lord. That is
possible only if we seek refuge with Dayaa Devi, which means
coming under the glance of Lord’s Mercy look. Vaishnavism talks
about Saranagathi or Prapathi extensively and in the nutself these
are the requirements.
Saranagathi has 6 elements -5 angas & an angi
1. acknowledging ones helplessness
2. determination not to err again
3. vowing to follow rules
4. unshakeable faith that the Lord is the sole refuge
5. seeking the lord as protector
These are 5 angas
surrender itself in accordance with 5 angas is called angi
Eventually mumukshus (persons who desire to seek Moksham) must
adopt Saragathi. Swami Desikan gives utmost importance to
Prapathi or SaraNAgathi.
